All The World's A Stage
All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.
As accomplished actors, we enter the street scene and play admirably. We know our roles and our places and follow silent stage directions. And if someone seems to have missed the final rehearsal, they just improvise.
The street scene is a place both for an audience and the players, for watching and being watched, at the same time. We are all characters in a big orchestrated scene in town, filmed in one seamless take: big and small, fast and slow, main and supporting roles, extras, alone or in a group, short dialogues or long monologues, tragedy and comedy...
All the world is a stage, and all men and women merely players. Just stop for a moment, consciously take on the role of observer and admire all these players.
Once you see something, it’s hard to un-see it. I found out that all of us are just actors, who play their roles admirably once we enter the street scene. And everywhere I went, I saw the same happen: people in the role of their lives. In support of my claim, I focused on the moments when these players just fell out of their roles. I saw people fall, stumble, miss their trams, stray, peer at themselves in a window, walk in the night, getting blocked by unforeseen questions... and their attempts at picking up the thread of their scripts. I caught them at the moment of not knowing how their scenario continued. I registered all these observations -like a fieldworker- writing them down but also with my camera. All these observations I then mixed into a film, divided into chapters, focussing on one aspect. The film is also about watching and being watched, and how the viewer’s gaze influences what is being watched. The role of the narrator and how a camera or gaze focuses, gives the subject a stage.
All the world’s a stage is my master project where I reseached the possibility that everyone is just acting. I created a digital publication in the form of a documentary that focuses on the human being in public space. A look behind the scene of the theatrum mundi. The film is accompanied by a script publication and theatre textbook.

Stel: we wandelen van ons kantoor naar de broodjeszaak, we wachten op de lift, we rusten uit op een parkbank. Wat valt ons op? Welke zaken vinden we achteraf vertellenswaardig?
Het alledaagse laat zich maar moeilijk observeren. Er wordt wel eens gezegd dat een vis niet het water ziet waarin hij zwemt. Net zo ontgaan ons de normaalste zaken van de wereld. Maar als het waar is dat de wereld een schouwspel is, hebben we maar de stalles te vinden om onze blik op scherp te stellen.
De film van Veerle Vervliet, studente grafische vormgeving, neemt de mens in de openbare ruimte tot onderwerp. In middellange shots levert ze de kijker over aan wat anders slechts een decor zou zijn. Daardoor wordt het moeilijker voorbij te gaan aan al dat voorbijgaan. Kleine gebeurtenissen krijgen een nieuwe impact. De straat oversteken was nog nooit zo’n avontuur.

Zeker, de voice-overstem knipoogt naar de format van de natuurdocumentaire, maar wie goed luistert, hoort slechts onbevangen bespiegelingen over kijken en bekeken worden. Vervliet hanteert de camera als iets met een eigen gewicht en afmeting. Mensen kijken in de lens, wijzen, maken v-tekens. Ze registreert en wordt geregistreerd. Bovendien is ze niet te beschroomd ook zelf even door beeld te stommelen.
De film staat op zichzelf maar wordt gecomplementeerd met grafisch werk. Er is een poster, een flipboek en een… script. Dat laatste klinkt misschien een beetje vreemd. Hebben we dan toch acteurs gezien? Neen. Het is een neerslag van Vervliets observaties en bedenkingen, die op hun beurt een eigen leven gaan leiden als script. Een blik achter de schermen van het theatrum mundi.
