Shifting Baselines
Malte Sänger
Shifting Baselines - once a concept of marine biology related to the creeping and unnoticed decline of species foud its way into social and cultural science. It describes the phenomenon of limited and distorted perception of change. Reference points serve to measure changes in the environment within one's own biographical horizon.

The memories of the places fade over the years. The images that remain, however, begin to increasingly connect with each other.

From 2012 - 2017 I worked for various German film productions abroad. When the work was done, I went out and took pictures with my analogue medium format camera. Each newly gained impression seemed to let the previous one fade, so that over the years the fragmented memories finally gave way to a big whole. The images, whose locations are often thousands of kilometres apart, are juxtaposed without comment. Freed from context the rearrangable and loosely bound overallstructure of the pictures in this publication let space and time merge.

The photographs were taken in Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Nigeria, Palestine, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America and Vatican City.
